Museum of Garrett Street

a community archive

Welcome to the Archive

13 Garrett Street is a two-floor monstrosity in the centre of Pōneke that houses a rotating crew of ~16 people, and has done so since the early 1990s. It is both a home and a community space; a gig venue, a refuge, a non-commercial space to create art and hold political discussions and organising.

And it CLOSING DOWN in November 2026.

We are using this time, the final breaths of Garrett, to gather the histories of the building’s uses and stories from the thousands of people who have spent time in this iconic space.

This archiving project was started at Matariki / Midwinter 2025, by a group of current and former residents of 13 Garrett Street, and we will collect in earnest until the doors close for the final time.

We want your stories! Photos, videos, gig and event posters, artwork, gossip, slander, ephemera, please submit it all.

LONG LIVE 13 GARRETT STREET

An update from the residents:

Last Friday, we received terrible news... Our tenancy at 13 Garrett Street will end on November 22 as the landlord begins the redevelopment of the building.

Even more gutting, we have been instructed to cease all publicly promoted events here.
This is due to a complaint from a member of the public about the building use that triggered a council investigation. This means the final months of 13 Garrett Street will be much quieter than once anticipated.
We are working with our landlord and the authorities to make our last months here beautiful. We request our community refrain from any negative communication or actions towards them.
Obviously, this is shocking and devastating news for the people who call this place home, to the massive community that supports what this place represents, and to the entire windy little capital. So much history, so much culture, so many memories made within these walls.
There is still a lot to process and think about together. How do we continue to pay homage to the rich history of this building? How do we hold on to everything we have all built together and continue providing a safe space for the city? This affects all of us and we want all of your input to help us navigate the way forward.
For now, we ask that you gather all the stories and footage you have of 13 Garrett Street and post it to our archival website project museumofgarrett.com.
The flatmates here are so extraordinarily grateful to ALL OF YOU who have helped make this space so magical over the last many decades. As much as 13 Garrett Street is an incredible central space in our city, it's you; the community, who make it so special. Let's make sure it gets the send off it deserves - we still have a chance to celebrate together and shape the future of our community.
Unuhia te rito o te harakeke, kei hea te korimako e kō? Kī mai ki ahau, “he aha te mea nui o te ao?”, māku e kī: he tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
It is the people.
Mauri ora tātou.

We held a fundraising party at Garrett Street on Saturday the 11th of October.
It was a huge success! We over-achieved our fundraising goal, and have been able to buy the infrastructure we need.

We have a printable and informative ZINE about the archive for anyone to download, print and distribute. Designed by Amber Clausner with additional artwork by Milo. Print it on A4 paper, double-sided, and fold it into an 8-page mini zine.
